Technology and Learning

A recent Chief Learning Officer article “Alexa how did I do today on sales calls” suggests that soon we’ll be able to “ask Alexa” how we did at work today. While technology and job aids are helpful supports in learning, I’m not sure I’m ready to ask Alexa about my performance. Part of this is my longstanding neuroscience opinion that “artificial” intelligence will always be there. Aren’t there nuances and innuendo that will remain human? The second part of my objection is that the best performance coaching is built on timing and trust. Performance coaching is best done just before an event is repeated, not afterward, so asking Alexa afterwards isn’t the right time. Trust is integral to leadership and to performance coaching. It is only the leader or mentor you truly trust who can offer you performance improvement tips you’ll actually implement. How will “Alexa” earn the trust of every employee?
